How A Coffee Roaster Machine Works

Since coffee roasters vary in size and price, this description may not accurately fit all machines. However, in general, at the top of the machine is called a hopper. This is where you pour the coffee beans in. The beans sit there in the hopper until you am ready to drop them. With a quality machine, you can tell that by a thermometer. The temperature reaches what the industry calls a charge temp. That is the temperature at which you want to drop the beans. On some larger machines, you then lift a type of lever, and the beans will drop into the drum.

The Coffee Roasting Process

Once the beans are in the drum, the drum with baffles turns, keeps the beans moving, keeps them separated, keeps them so that they are heating evenly so you get a nice even roast. When you drop all the beans, all the beans are going to taste pretty much the same. Machines have a side glass which helps you see the beans. Even more useful is what is known as the trier on some machines. The trier can help you at any time during the roast. You can pull beans out and keep an eye on them.  For many experienced roasters, this is their most useful tool. They want to look at the coffee beans, they want to be able to smell them, and they want to be able to see them. In other words, they want to know what they’re dealing with. The trier allows them to do that.

Some machines have a plate at the end of the axle which can be removed for lubricating the axle. Then there is what is basically a drop door. This door allows you to drop the hot beans out of the roaster to cool them off.  You open the drop door, beans come out, and fall into a cooling tray with the stir arms turning around. There is suction there from the bottom to help cool it fast. What you want once you drop a roast is for it to cool off as fast as it can so the beans stop cooking, stop roasting. When that is done, you open the shoot. The beans drop into a basket and, at that point, the roast is done. That is the process of roasting coffee beans.
